Pilates

The Pilates method was created by Joseph Pilates, of Greek descent, in the early 20th century. The method consists of a series of exercises performed either on the floor or with the help of specialized equipment, such as the Reformer or the Cadillac.

The purpose of Pilates is to strengthen the core, aiming for spinal stability, improve posture, restore balance and strength in the body’s muscles, and enhance joint mobility. The exercises focus on proper breathing, concentration, and awareness of movement. When Pilates is practiced consistently, with controlled movements that give the sensation of exercise rather than therapy, maximum effectiveness is achieved with safety.

Pilates on equipment can be applied to individuals of all ages and physical conditions, as exercises can be adapted to suit each person’s needs, any limitations, and goals. The intensity of the exercises increases as the body adapts to the movements.

GYROTONIC® GYROTONIC® is an exercise system created by Juliu Horvath in the 1980s, focusing on body movement through circular and three-dimensional motions. In GYROTONIC®, we use specialized equipment like the Pulley Tower, which allows practitioners to perform movements across the full range of joint motion, supporting three-dimensional and functional movement. This reduces sudden starts and stops during exercise, which are the moments where injuries often occur.

The exercises of GYROTONIC® are gentle on the joints and are ideal for individuals who want to improve their physical condition, rehabilitate injuries, enhance joint mobility and flexibility, and feel their bodies align through freedom of movement, but with highly coordinated function and without putting excessive pressure on the body. The method increases the body's endurance and strength, promotes a more natural and organic movement of the body, and enhances awareness of both movement and breath.

Pilates and GYROTONIC®: Similarities and Differences Pilates and GYROTONIC® have many similarities, but also significant differences, mainly in the equipment and the way the exercises are performed.

Similarities

Use of Specialized Equipment: Both methods utilize specialized machines to enhance the effectiveness of the exercises.

Development of Flexibility, Strength, and Stability: Both methods promote movement control and body awareness, by focusing on strengthening the body, improving overall mobility, stability, and posture.

Muscle Strengthening with Controlled Resistance: Both methods use resistance (springs in Pilates, weights with pulleys in GYROTONIC®) to strengthen muscles without causing excessive stress on the joints.

Focus on Proper Posture and Movement: In both methods, movements from everyday life are repeated under controlled conditions, aiming to help practitioners develop body awareness and improve their posture and movement.

Differences

Equipment: In Pilates, the equipment is more static and structured in movement, offering resistance through springs. In GYROTONIC®, the equipment is more flexible, allowing a wider range of movements with circular and three-dimensional motions. The resistance is provided by a system using pulleys with weights and ropes.

Type of Movement: In Pilates, movements are more linear and focused in a specific direction, centered on strength, flexibility, and rehabilitation. In GYROTONIC®, movements are more free, circular, and three-dimensional, characterized by flow and resembling dance. GYROTONIC® focuses more on the movement of joints across their full range of motion.

Exercise Philosophy: The philosophy of Pilates is based on stability and control, with proper body alignment and symmetrical weight distribution. GYROTONIC®’s philosophy focuses on freedom of movement and circularity, with fluid movements that help the body move in a natural and organic way.

Resistance and Elasticity: In Pilates, resistance comes from adjustable springs that can be set for different levels of intensity. In GYROTONIC®, the resistance combines pulleys, ropes, and weights, allowing for a more “fluid” and continuous movement.

Focus on Movement Coordination: In Pilates, the focus is on resistance and control of movements, helping with muscle strengthening, and the exercises are mostly linear and geometric. In GYROTONIC®, movement coordination involves more continuous, circular movements that connect the body in a more organic and “fluid” way.
